How government funding of science rewards U.S. taxpayers

It seems like there is a constant debate about the governments role in funding projects. This article points out that there are always going to be projects that fail and succeed. Specifically, they point out that $3.8 billion dollars were spent on the Human Genome Project (HGP), which sounds extraordinary (and is), however this project has lead to nearly $800 billion dollars worth of economic activity since. Additionally, the research that has come from the HGP has been instrumental in moving science forward that will benefit the quality of life of almost all Americans.
