Everything you ever wanted to know about error bars- and more!

Confused about confidence intervals?

Stymied by standard error??

For all of you out there crunching data and polishing paper drafts, check out this invaluable little publication on error bars and the basics of the underlying statistics:

  • Cumming, G., Fidler, F. & Vaux, D.L. Error bars in experimental biology. The Journal of cell biology 177, 7-11 (2007).  doi: 10.1083/jcb.200611141

While you’re at it, a quick brush-up on the basics of uncertainty propagation during addition and multiplication operations doesn’t hurt either…

A great resource for severely statistically-challenged engineers like myself 🙂

this is awesome – basically I could have read this paper instead of taking stats 511..

Just finished reading a book with a great discussion of this question. See pages 212-220:
